WiFi LAN - help ?

Post by Autarkus »

ok... this is driving me crazy..
I'm setting up a network for a mate,
got a cheepy ADSL/WiFi router, which works ok,
but we're having problems with the wireless bit
of the network...

heres the situ:

Got the router conected as 'always on', no trouble,
with one PC wired into it for the 'net - works fine.
I built a PC for my mate, with a ?50 linksys WiFi card that
worked fine here, but the areial got busted en route to
the new location - it worked ok, with a Bad signal strength,
and slow connection.
I replaced this with a new ?25 linksys card - this had No End
of trouble- dropping out while keeping the link to the WiFi
network (but not routing to the internet, while the laptop
sat next to it, also connected to the wifi, had no problems,
so i doubt its the cheepy router ! ).
It would keep conn for ages, and though multiple re-boots,
then drop at random (as far as i can tell).
Thinking it *might* be a faulty card, swapped in a netgear 54g card,
and this has worked ok fo 3-4 days, but now seams to be suffering
from the same drop out.
(Connected to wifi network, not able to see the 'net, while
the router is connecting the wired PC quite happily).

There is a mobile phone mast nearby, and the wifi network is about
30-40 meters from the main house- slow (ie 20-30) conn is fine, as long
as it's reliable.

have i missed something, or are we looking at too much interfearance for
that distance link ?
(Running a cable is a viable option, as my mate still has trenches between the
house and the new building.....)
oh, and, if running cable is the prefered solution, what cable is recomended at the
mo ? (cat5e, cat6 - I've been out of it for a while now, and any help on standards
would be apprecialted ! )

Any updates to the Router firmware available? I found that updating the firmware on my Netgear router improved it's reliablility to near perfect quality.
