My D drive in my PC has decided to pretty much die on me. A friend brought a cd round that has varying programs on it, one of which being "HDD Regenrator". So far it's found 89 bad sectors, and managed to recover 31. That leaves the drive with 58 (and counting?) bad sectors, making the drive rather broken.

The annoying thing is, my D drive is where all my downloads are and my games, along with anything else I put on my PC. My C drive is only 80GB and that appears to be fine atm, but my 500GB D drive might well be a total loss =(

I'm hoping I can at least look at what's on the drive, after recoving enough sectors. Then I can write down what's on it that I wanna keep/redownload/reinstall etc etc. Needless to say my PC is unhappy at the moment, and is in need of some loving TLC. At least I don't have to reinstall windows (*starts molesting every piece of wood he can find*), cos that would be horrible indeed.

Right, I'm off to town to spend copious amounts of money in my local PC shop!

Edit:

P.S. I wanted to add... I AM coming to LL10! Even if I have to turn up with new HDs, millions of game discs, my vista DVD and a small pharmacy of painkillers... I SHALL be there!

I would recommend arriving on Friday then, so you have the extra day to rebuild ;)

I wouldn't stand for that mate! That's a new PC isn't it, bought just before February wasn't it? Last time I checked, such things would still be under warranty!

Note - a PC World isn't far from our door. It's a very good venue for a LAN. :D

Update for you chaps.

Just got back from my local pc shop, with a new 500GB hd, and also a 160GB hd inside an external usb hd box.

Wanted an external hd for a little while now, so I could xfer stuff about quicker an easier, than taking hours doing it via an 8GB pen drive =P

Anyway, seeing as how all my drives are sata, what I plan to do is the following:

Bung my shiny new 500GB drive into my PC (along with a couple of case fans, as I still haven't installed the water cooling gear yet, meh), remove the 160GB drive from the mini case, and put the dodgy 500GB in there, connect the mini case to my laptop using it's usb cable, and see if I can read it.

The plan is, as it's an external drive I won't need to have the hd plugged into a pc on bootup. I've tried this already on my main pc though, being sata I can hot plug'n'play it, but it's still connected to my pc via the mobo. By plonking it inside an external housing, connectingit to my laptop, I hope I can get some progress on it.

In the meantime, I'll have my shiny new hd in my pc with which to prep for LL10.

Oh yeah, regardless of what happens to my 500GB hd (the dodgy one), it's obviously troubled (read "fuxed"), so even if I manage to rescue data off it, it's gonna be returned to scan (or whoever) under warranty for a replacement.

Watch this space ^_^
