I just installed VMWare Player to evaluate some software at work. Before the supplier turned up, I just wanted to test that VMWare Player would do its thing. I came across this resource:

If you really fancy playing with them without reformatting your own machines, you can find images of various versions of Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, FreeBSD and Debian.
